Elmina Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by the Portuguese in 1482 as São Jorge da Mina (St George of the Mine) Castle in what was then known as the Gold Coast. The castle was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, and is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. First established as a trade settlement, it later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade.
Kakum National Park covers 360 square kilometres of Ghana’s rapidly dwindling rainforest. Wildlife in the park includes African forest elephants, seven primate species, more than 500 species of butterflies, and around 250 species of birds. The park is one of only two locations in Africa with a canopy walkway, which reaches up to 30 metres above the forest floor.
Cost (includes transfers, lunch, drinks and entrance to the Castle and National Park): GBP 30 (+ booking fee)
