Pre-conference seminars

On Tuesday 26 July, ahead of the main conference, delegates have the opportunity to hear from and share experiences with colleagues in one of three seminars. This is specifically aimed at newly appointed vice-chancellors.

1. Making best use of governing bodies

Maintaining a good relationship with the governing body is essential for any university leader. It requires an appreciation of the benefits and expertise that governing body members from diverse backgrounds can bring, as well as their decision-making and regulatory roles. This seminar will compare systems for the recruitment and scope of governing bodies, hear from current vice-chancellors about their strategy and experience, and identify the benefits that can accrue from getting the relationship right.

2. Leadership and the vice-chancellor: the critical first years

When a vice-chancellor assumes office, they are expected to be creative, responsive, articulate, and a leader from the very start. Often, while dealing with external and internal challenges, there is little time devoted to learning on the job. This session – aimed specifically at new, recently-appointed, and aspiring vice-chancellors – brings established university leaders as well as those new to the role together to look at the first few years of being a university leader. It will consider ways in which senior staff can be prepared for the challenge of leadership, how to manage priorities in the critical early stages, and how these can be forged into a strategic approach.

3. Establishing a brand for new universities

What makes an institution distinct? As the number of universities increases, the problem of establishing a distinct ‘brand’ becomes more complex. This seminar will consider how newer universities can establish a distinct role in the marketplace, be increasingly dynamic, and provide new and different opportunities compared to their more traditional counterparts. Given the often competing demands of local and national stakeholders, it will also look at how academic excellence can be maintained, and the role of international rankings. Delegates will hear from leaders of universities ranked within the top 50 under 50 years old by the Times Higher Education.
