Enhancing gender equity in the management and leadership of higher education

University of Nairobi, Kenya, 12-16 September 2016

A gender conference followed by a leadership and management training workshop

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and the University of Nairobi (UoN) are holding two events in September 2016 which will look at enhancing gender equity and equality in the management and leadership of higher education. This forms part of the ACU Gender Programme activities.

Delegates can either attend the conference on its own, or the conference and workshop together.

1. Conference – 12 September 2016

The SDGs: an opportunity to embed gender equity and equality in higher education

This one-day conference will focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a set of 17 goals and 169 targets that United Nations member states have endorsed as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The conference will allow participants to debate and deliberate with panellists about the SDG targets to be met within the next 15 years as a means towards ending poverty and hunger, protecting the world from environmental degradation, and fostering prosperous, peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.

The conference aims to:

  • Bring together various participants from diverse backgrounds and countries to consider how higher education institutions are using the SDG framework to achieve gender equity and equality.

  • Act as a forum for academics and other stakeholders to deliberate on the following SDGs:
    - SDG 4: Quality education
    - SDG 5: Gender equality
    - SDG 8: Decent work and economic environment
    - SDG 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions
    - SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals

2. Leadership training workshop – 13-16 September 2016

Enhancing gender equity in the management and leadership of higher education

The workshop is open to delegates of the one-day conference and aims to:

  • Develop a group of highly trained and confident professional women who will be equipped to:
    - Collaborate extensively across the country
    - Draw on each other’s strengths
    - Strengthen each other’s weaknesses
    - Introduce new initiatives to help embed gender equity practices in their universities.

The objectives of the workshop are to:

  • Work with selected ACU Gender Programme training modules to explore women’s positions in participants’ own universities, professional fields, and the higher education system in Kenya.

  • Investigate concepts, issues, and practices of:
    - Management skills
    - Gender mainstreaming in universities
    - Women and governance in higher education
    - Women and research

  • Ensure that, at the end of the programme, the participants take back well-developed strategies to bring about sustainable change for themselves and the status of women in higher education institutions in their country.

  • Demonstrate, through the workshop processes, how teams and networks come into being and operate effectively. Show how such networking is essential if collaborative work is to be sustainable.

  • Develop the group’s confidence and capacity so that each member will feel able to assume ownership of the aims and objectives of the programme, and take it forward.
