Developing innovative minds: how to foster independent thinking as student numbers rise

Nanyang Executive Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 16 June 2017

NTU Art Design and Media Building

Universities throughout the world face rapidly increasing student numbers. They are also under pressure to develop innovative, enquiring minds that will form the next generation of researchers. How can these demands be reconciled, given universities' limited capacity to give students individual attention?

Programme

The ACU has partnered with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) – an ACU member institution – in Singapore, to run a one-day seminar to identify practical approaches universities are taking to meet these needs. The seminar will divide into two sessions:

  1. Nurturing innovative, independent and enquiring minds: how to support students at pre-university and undergraduate level
  2. Supporting postgraduate excellence and innovation

The seminar coincides with a meeting of the ACU Council and the Commonwealth Science Conference. As a result we have been able to bring together eminent university leaders and practitioners from throughout the Commonwealth to share their experience. Read about the speakers here.

The seminar will be followed by an evening reception hosted by NTU, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK. Delegates will be joined by Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan alumni, the ACU Council, and other invited guests.

Who should attend?

This seminar is suitable for senior leaders (e.g. vice-chancellors, faculty leaders, course leaders), research managers, and those with responsibility for student development. We also welcome those working in government and business who have responsibility for, or interest in, this area.

Please note the ACU is not providing any funding for this seminar, and therefore we expect the majority of delegates to be from the Asia-Pacific region, including the following Commonwealth countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei Durassalam, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Sri Lanka. Delegates from ACU member institutions in Hong Kong are also welcome to attend.

Why participate?

By participating in the seminar you will hear from university leaders and other key figures in the higher education sector about their experiences of embedding innovation and creativity in the curriculum.

The seminar will also provide an opportunity to meet with the ACU Council, who are vice-chancellors representing all regions of ACU membership across the Commonwealth, and the ACU's senior management team – including our new Secretary General, Dr Joanna Newman.
