Important new renewable energy project supported by the ACU

PRE-LEAP-RE (PREparing for a Long-Term joint EU-AU Research and Innovation Partnership on Renewable Energy)

PRE-LEAP-RE is an important new EU–funded project that aims to build a joint Africa-Europe research and innovation programme in renewable energies, and the ACU is thrilled to be taking part.

The project brings together 17 organisations from across Africa and Europe. Each body brings skills to complement others and will enhance or emphasise the qualities of other parties.

This 14 month project, coordinated by the CEA in France, will define the joint research and innovation agenda in renewable energies for the Africa-Europe partnership, designing a co-funding mechanism to support future collaborative activities and seek commitments from African and European renewable energy funding agencies to contribute to the programme’s funding mechanism.

The ACU’s particular role, in collaboration with Strathmore University in Kenya, will be in designing a monitoring and evaluation framework for the new joint programme. It will also encourage the UK Government to participate as a funder, exploring how it could support the UK’s existing schemes for supporting the development of renewable energies in Africa and how they might be aligned with the future joint programme.

Key UK Government departments include the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
