2015 Programme themes, dates and location

Every year three themes are evaluated. Participants can choose to partake in evaluating all topics or just the ones they feel are most relevant to them.

F243 Managing in a political context

This theme will address issues such as managing university relations with governments or communities (and how university autonomy can be maintained in that context). It will also explore how managers can create and deliver good and effective policies in a highly political environment, and how to lead and bring about internal change.

AssessorDr Max Blouw, President and Vice-Chancellor, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada

F244 Financial management

This theme will address approaches to and issues with financial management in a multiincome stream environment. It will look at both the management of income sources and streams and the effective management of reserves, and will explore differing approaches to how financial resources are deployed and managed by the university. It will also cover accountability issues for all those involved in the management of the university finances at a senior and strategic level.

AssessorEmeritus Professor Jeanette Hacket, AM, former Vice-Chancellor, Curtin University, Australia

F245 IT governance

This topic will cover issues such as data security and audits, IT architecture, and reports to governing bodies. This is not about the management of IT or IT projects, but about all the issues around IT regardless of the particular approach or structure of IT management. It is about how universities account to their boards for IT-related issues, such as data security arrangements, what needs to be audited (data sets and/or procedures), and how these are reported in an informative and balanced manner.

Assessor: Alan Calder, Founder and CEO, IT Governance Ltd, UK

The face-to-face workshop will be hosted by the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from the 24-26 August 2015. If required, the second cohort workshop will be in October 2015 (venue TBD).
