Ratings, rankings and differentiation of the South African university system

The inaugural ACU Perspectives was delivered by Professor Loyiso Nongxa, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Witwatersrand (Wits University), Johannesburg, South Africa.  The event was held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 in London.

Professor Loyiso Nongxa has been the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Wits University since 2003. He previously served as Vice-Principal, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Wits.

Professor Nongxa is a mathematician and holds a BSc (cum laude) and MSc (cum laude) from the University of Fort Hare, Eastern Cape, South Africa. In 1978, he became South Africa's first African Rhodes Scholar, going on to earn a DPhil in Mathematics from the University of Oxford.

Prior to joining Wits, he was a Professor in Mathematics and Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape. He also formerly lectured at the universities of Fort Hare, Lesotho, and Natal. Over the past decade, Professor Nongxa has led a R1.5billion capital development campaign that has positioned the University for 21st century teaching and learning. This includes the establishment of eight institutes that will produce cutting edge research focusing on areas such as energy, global climate change, minerals and exploration, population, health and finance.
