The ACU lends its support to protecting education in conflict

Published on 03 June 2015

Last week the ACU sent a letter, signed by its Secretary General, to the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA), declaring the organisation’s support for the initiative.

The GCPEA was established in 2010 by like-minded organisations which all want to see an end to attacks on educational institutes, students, teachers and other staff. The GCPEA counts Human Rights Watch, Save the Children and UNICEF among its members.

Educational institutes, including universities, often come under attack during warfare; sometimes through direct military assault or by being taken over to be used as military bases. Whatever the intention, the effect is destructive. It has a direct impact on local communities, breaking down the very thing that often ties them together: education.

Education is a basic human right and it is for this reason the ACU is pledging its support to this global initiative.
