ACU Titular Fellows 2011

The winners of the 2011 ACU Titular Fellowships have been announced. The Fellowships will be held between October 2011 and September 2012.

The George Weston Limited, Canada Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Nafisat B Ikenweiwe at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. Her programme, at the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Southampton, UK, will look at the application of remote sensing to the study of the productivity of the Gulf of Guinea ecosystem.

The George Weston Limited, Canada Fellowship has also been awarded to Dr Helen O Imafador at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Her work at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, will aim to uncover the key knowledge required to unravel the identification of soil nematodes using DNA barcoding techniques.

The Gordon and Jean Southam Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Diana Clarke at the University of Manitoba, Canada. She will be an Institute of Health Science Visiting Scholar at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work, University of Manchester, UK, where she will investigate decision-making at hospital emergency departments and the degree to which the attitudes of health care providers to mental illness influence clinical decisions.

The Jacky McAleer Memorial Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Michael Kasusse at Makerere University, Uganda. He will investigate the ways in which information science specialists are changing from custodians of knowledge to making an impact in supporting public health research, at Swansea University, UK.

The Swansea University Fulton Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Saburi A Raji at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The aim of his fellowship research at Swansea University, UK, is to apply a new grid generation system for parallel unstructured triangular surface grids to civil engineering problems, including thin-shell and membrane structures.

The University of Manitoba Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Julius N Ingweye at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He will make use of the near infrared spectroscopy facilities at the University of Manitoba, Canada, to nutritionally evaluate raw and processed seeds from three species of wild Senna, with the aim of supporting its use as food for humans and livestock.

The University of Oxford Fellowship has been awarded to Dr Morgan S Pratchett at James Cook University, Australia. His work at the University of Oxford, UK, will assess the incidence of inbreeding among coral reef fishes, specifically butterfly fishes, and consider whether current management activities are contributing to increased inbreeding among natural populations of reef fishes.

The University of Oxford Fellowship has also been awarded to Dr Sunitha C Srinivas at Rhodes University, South Africa. She will work with the British Heart Foundation Health Promotion Research Group at the University of Oxford, UK, on modelling the burden of cardiovascular diseases in South Africa, and developing and piloting an intervention project in this area.

The Wighton Titular Fellowship in Engineering has been awarded to Dr Cheong Leung at the University of Hong Kong. His programme at the University of Nottingham, UK, will evaluate existing carbon capture and sequestration technologies and study their feasibility for use in Hong Kong and China’s power industries to reduce carbon intensity.
