Why the ACU supports apprenticeships

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is proud to be a part of the UK's national apprenticeship scheme offering people a stepping stone into their careers. But why would an organisation that champions higher education, support apprenticeships?

Louise Menzies, the ACU’s HR Project Manager explains: 'As an organisation the ACU strives to encourage innovation in all areas of learning and development. One of our vision statements as a higher education membership organisation is to "Create opportunities for individuals to fulfil their potential". To support this ethos, we are proud to offer apprenticeship opportunities.'

The Apprentice

Peter Stevens, 22 from Enfield, is a finance apprentice at the ACU. Peter is studying an AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting and he wanted an apprenticeship as supplementary learning to the course.

'My study is 70% at home and 30% in class. I work full time at the ACU and then study on top of that' Peter explains. 'You need commitment to work and study, but there are huge benefits. I’ve learnt to juggle both.'

Peter feels that his biggest gain from his apprenticeship is real world experience. Alongside practical skills, such as learning finance systems and processing payments, he’s also learnt about dealing with people. 'I don’t think I’d work as efficiently simply going straight into a job after study,' Peter adds.

Peter’s advice for those considering taking up an apprenticeship is to 'focus on your course, be punctual and listen to the people that you work with.'

A year into his apprenticeship, Peter is now in a position where he’s helping to teach new staff members with the knowledge that he’s gained.

Louise Menzies points out, 'In our experience, apprenticeships provide an excellent range of benefits for both the apprentice and the organisation. We develop the skills and knowledge of the apprentice by providing a supportive working and learning environment. Staff are encouraged to support the development of the apprentice and this in turn enhances the mentorship skills and engagement of the organisation as whole.'

'Staff at the ACU take great pride in being able to support the provision of valuable work experience and skills development.'
