The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Published on 03 April 2018

It’s the turn of Australia’s Gold Coast to host the prestigious Commonwealth Games this year. On 4 April, the huge sporting event commences, involving over 6,600 athletes representing 71 nations and territories from across the Commonwealth.

2018 is the 21st Commonwealth Games. They have been held every four years since 1930 when the first Games were held in Hamilton, Canada (1942 and 1946 were the exceptions due to World War II). The inaugural Games involved only 400 athletes from 11 countries - a far cry from the thousands taking part now.

This year marks a big step forward for gender equity as it will be the first time that a major multi-sport Games has an equal number of medal events for women and men. This significant development shows the commitment to fairness that is at the heart of the event. The Games bring together the member nations of the Commonwealth to compete on a ‘level playing field’ and embrace the spirit of sporting fair play. Equality, along with humanity and destiny, are core values for The Commonwealth Games. That’s why they’re often referred to as the ‘friendly games’.

It’s not just about the big event though. The Commonwealth Games Federation, who develop the Games, advocates improving the general wellbeing of Commonwealth nationals. It is part of the bigger picture. Subsequently, it encourages and is involved in education in sport development.

The role of universities in nurturing sport is explored in the latest issue of The ACU Bulletin. It features an insight into Griffith University’s work with elite athletes and how the University plays an integral role in their success. Also in Bulletin, Dr Martin Toms, Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching at the University of Birmingham, explores the important role of sports science and international collaboration.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games take place from 4-15 April in Australia.
