The African Studies Association of the UK (ASAUK) will host a meeting themed 'Open access and research publication: Making sense of UK government proposals in African Studies' between 13.00h and 17.00h on Monday 18 March 2013 at the Dr Seng Tee Lee Centre for Manuscript and Book Studies, 4th floor, Senate House, London.

Since David Willetts, Minister of State for Universities and Science, commissioned the ‘Finch Report’ on how to expand access sustainably to peer-reviewed publications/journal articles, there has been considerable debate, particularly in the humanities and social sciences, about the likely impact of open access on academics, universities and the research culture, scholarly journals, and learned societies. The ASAUK invites participants to attend this meeting in order to get to grips with the proposals and debate the issues and their impact within African Studies.

Jonathan Harle, Programmes Manager (Research Capacity) at the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), will speak at this meeting in a line-up which also includes Graham Furniss, Janet Remmington, Stephanie Kitchen, and David Clover.

The meeting, to be chaired by the President of the ASAUK, Steph Newell, has been arranged in association with the ACU, SCOLMA, the International African Institute, and the Royal African Society.
