The latest edition of the ACU’s membership magazine, The Bulletin, is now available to members. The Bulletin aims to keep members informed about ACU activities as well as other developments in higher education throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.

In this the 179^th edition, the former Secretary General of the ACU, Professor Michael Gibbons, writes on these times of radical change for university-based research noting that ‘universities are transforming themselves from “ivory towers” into “laboratories for community"' and that 'research is moving away from discipline-based problems into areas where it is expected to improve understanding of a broad range of complex problems…’ (p.3).

‘Universities across the world are only just beginning to grapple with open access’, writes Jon Harle in his article which offers an overview of this vast and rapidly evolving topic and explores some of its initial implications (pp. 8-9).

Duleep Deosthale and Sean Matthews’s article ‘Challenging questions for an uncertain future’ is a reflection on Sir David King’s ‘profoundly impressive, synoptic, witty, compassionate and…challenging’ lecture in Hong Kong - the last in the ACU Centenary Lecture Series (pp. 10-11).  

In her article titled ‘Academic networks, internationalisation and empire’, Tamsin Pietsch reminds us that understanding the history of the modern university is key to a critical understanding of higher education today and the unequal planes on which it operates (pp. 18-19).
