Twelve universities from Africa have been selected to take part in a new ACU-run project that will help them to develop their academic staff early on in their careers.

The project, called ‘Structured Training for African Researchers’ (or ‘STARS’ in short), aims to strengthen the long-term vitality of research and teaching in Africa by facilitating structured institutional support for the next generation of academics – support that many early career academics feel is currently lacking.

The selected institutions are based in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda and the project will assist the participating universities by strengthening institutional frameworks, developing a collaborative online professional skills course, and through an individual mentoring scheme for the early career academics.

At the end of the Robert Bosch Stiftung-funded project, it is envisaged that the ACU will be able to offer a high-quality series of creative commons online training courses to universities across the developing world.

The STARS project is one of several ACU projects that focus on strengthening early career academics across member institutions.
